ABSTRACT

The need for economy, convenience and speed of access has driven the development of electronic systems. Computers have given rise to entirely new ways of storing and retrieving records.

Data is represented in ‘digital’ code – the ultra-basic numerical language that computers use for their internal processes. This applies to all kinds of data, from numbers and text to sounds, graphics and video images. Anything that can be digitized can be processed, stored and retrieved by computer.
