ABSTRACT

Lenses optimized at 0.1 magnification may need to be used in reverse mode for the range 1.0–6.0 typically given by extension bellows. A variety of distinct designs of lenses are available for camera use in the macro range, and most have ‘macro’ or ‘micro’ in their names. Typically, optimization is for magnification 0.1 or 0.2 for general purpose macro lenses, and for greater magnifications for ‘true’ macro lenses. Most small- and medium-format camera systems offer several macro lenses in focusing mounts for general use, as well as for close-up work extending into the photomacrography region with the aid of extension tubes or bellows. For convenience of operation and cost-saving, some macro lenses are available in simplified mount form, using an abbreviated lens barrel which attaches directly to an extension bellows. For photomacrography, autofocus cameras must normally be used in manual focusing mode, possibly with autofocus assist.
