ABSTRACT

This chapter includes many important features of Radio Data System (RDS). Annex R of the Radio Broadcast Data System Standard, entitled "Emergency Alert System Open Data Application (ODA)," makes use of the ODA protocol to provide RDS solutions to implementing the Emergency Alert System of the Federal Communications Commission. A separately licensed technology called in-receiver database (ID) logic is available for the use of receiver manufacturers to provide RDS-like information about AM and non RDS FM stations. The call letters of the station can then be displayed on the receiver display, somewhat analogous to the RDS Program Service name display. The formats used in ID logic do not match the defined RDS program type codes but can be constructed into a single list. It is possible to construct a consumer receiver that provides several of the RDS features, even on AM and non-RDS FM stations.
