ABSTRACT

In the June 1995 edition of the Director magazine there was an article (“Valiant knight seeks short-term contract”) in which Charles Handy analysed the increasing trend towards task-centred work, forecasting that we would soon see companies as collections of medium-term projects, co-ordinated by other medium-term groups. He also quoted the astonishing figure of only 55 per cent of the available workforce being in full-time jobs — a figure declining year by year. All studies since that time have shown the trend continuing. The contractor is therefore becoming more and more common.
