ABSTRACT
When people from Europe were first in contact with the indigenous peoples of highland New Guinea in Melanesia, they assumed that, although there were differences in language, culture, technology and so on, they had come across people with fundamentally the same drives and ambitions. It was puzzling to them, therefore, when they introduced football to the people known as the Gahuku-Gama.
