ABSTRACT

Digital processes are being introduced to the production stage of filmmaking. Generally, the capture of images has remained unchanged through the years— light enters through a lens and strikes a piece of film negative that is moving through the camera at 24 fps. One of the earliest developments where technology has changed image capture is in the application of timecode to the negative during shooting. Aaton Corporation has had such an application in their cameras for over fifteen years. The codings support film-to-tape transfer, have been the advent of digital, nonlinear editing (DNLE) systems, and productions are just beginning to reap the rewards of in-camera timecode.
