ABSTRACT

RECENT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS in Asia are fascinating, especially those in China. That country's rapid growth and transformation amaze us all. China exerts a kind of magnetic attraction for investment by companies from around the world, in direct contrast to Russia, for example. The source of this magnetism is China's huge market of somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 billion inhabitants. While Russia started its entry to the modern world by changing its political system, the Chinese government has succeeded in transforming its economy first, by adopting open policies that are extremely flexible and realistic. It must be said, of course, that China's market socialism, and its approach to human rights, are not easily understandable for us outsiders. The world's entrepreneurs find that evaluation of the potential of the Chinese market is a matter of considerable strategic importance.
