ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to consider the degree to which the social, economic, and political environment promotes or inhibits entrepreneurial behaviour in the UK. Specifically, the chapter will:

identify the nature and role of political intervention;

evaluate factors affecting the entrepreneur-formation phase;

consider aspects of social structure which promote and inhibit entrepre-neurship;

evaluate government policies designed to increase entrepreneurial activity;

consider the overall impact of the environment on entrepreneurial activities within the hospitality, tourism and leisure industries.
