ABSTRACT

This chapter points out areas where the film-video fit is good, areas where it is not, and the options that are available. One of the first problems to be addressed is the difference in film and video frame rates, or the number of film or video images produced in a specific interval. The chapter discusses the compatibility of image size and proportion. The letterbox transfer is popular with film buffs and purists but is not favored by television broadcasters and distributors, who believe that the reduction in image size on the screen and the distraction of the black mask affront the average viewer. One of the most difficult transitions to deal with in the film-to-video transfer process is the problem of differing contrast ranges. An area of major incompatibility between film and video systems is resolution, the capacity for capturing picture detail.
