ABSTRACT

On the basis of fuller data given in the three national sources quoted, the author estimates that the proportions of total spending on tourism attributable to domestic tourism are at least 75% in the USA, 60% in France and 50% in the UK. However, these are certainly conservative estimates, which do not take fully into account shorter overnight trips and day tripping. In Britain 1.2 billion ‘tourism leisure day trips’ were taken by the British in 1996 (source: Countryside Commission, 1997).
