ABSTRACT

Thetwomajorproblemsthatmustbeaddressedinproducingrealisticanimation ofmultiplehumanfiguresarethedesignofbodies(withclothing)andthe specificationofmovement.Thischapterdiscussesmovementspecificationand thedevelopmentsthatareneededforanimationtoprogressfromkinematic methodstoanidealintelligentsystemthatinterfaceswiththecreativeprocessof theanimatorandprovidesmultipleknowledgebasestorelievetheanimatorof tediousdetailwork.Thenewsystemwillincorporateknowledgeofthepersonal andphysicalcharacteristicsofthefigurestobeanimatedaswellasstrategiesto carryoutspecifictasks.Thesystemwillproducefeasiblemovementpatterns fromverygeneralhigh-levelinputs.Inadditiontothegeneraldiscussion,several projectsatSimonFraserUniversitythataddressvariousaspectsofthemovement specificationproblemaredescribed.
