The grieving process has long been misunderstood. As originally described by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her classic book On Death and Dying (Macmillan, 1969), patients diagnosed with a terminal illness went through five stages of “receiving catastrophic news”:
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance
