ABSTRACT

Encouraging employees to be proud of their jobs and accomplishments can generate an extra amount of zeal in their work every day. The better employees feel about themselves, the better their performance and productivity will be. Surprisingly, it does not always take much for a manager to produce such results.

The easiest, simplest, and least expensive way is to say “thank you” for a job well done or for extra time and effort put into a project.

Listen to employees’ complaints and use some of the solutions they suggest. When projects are often delayed because a copier keeps breaking down, for instance, the employee who uses it most may know whether or not it is beyond repairing.

Allow employees to increase their skills. Send them to training courses that will further enhance their knowledge on a particular subject. A secretary may know a particular word processing system or spread sheet program, but an advanced course will not only advance his or her skills but may also save you time and money because of new efficiencies.

When employees possess special skills, have them teach it to others.

Some employers promote and pay for fitness programs, which can boost employee energy, health, and self-esteem.
