ABSTRACT

Most employees are self-motivated. Their motivation comes from feeling good about what they are doing, sensing accomplishments, and tracking their achievements. To encourage motivation in the workplace, the manager should use approaches such as the following:

Encouragement. Compliments are very powerful, and employees appreciate them.

Input and choice. Employees who feel empowered and accountable tend to perform better.

Measures of quality. Employees are motivated when they can measure the outcomes of their work and track their performance over time.

Stake sharing. When possible, allow employees to participate in stock holding programs. Ownership increases motivation to succeed.

Responsibility and leadership opportunities. Employees are motivated by challenges.

Tolerance of errors. A manager who nitpicks will rob employees of motivation.

Fun and variety. All work and no play will make Jack a dull, uninspired employee. Schedule company picnics, parties, and pot lucks.
