ABSTRACT

Managers can better motivate their staffs by understanding Abraham Maslow's concepts of human motivation. Maslow described a pyramid of human needs; each need must be satisfied before the next can be addressed. The five needs, in the order in which they need to be achieved, are:

Physiological (hunger, thirst, shelter, and sex)

Safety (security and protection)

Social (friendship, belonging, love, and acceptance)

Esteem or ego (self-respect, achievement, recognition, and attention)

Self-actualization (personal goals)
