In many ways there has been a convergence of skills and technology, for nonlinear editing in itself is not new. Film was the original nonlinear post-production medium and all the skills the film editor has developed over nearly a century are now being learnt by the newer breed of videotape editors. At the same time, film editors are moving away from the conventional flat-bed systems and joining their tape-based colleagues and editing a comprehensive range of productions on computerized nonlinear systems. Computerized nonlinear systems have been used to edit feature films, documentaries, drama, light entertainment, news, current affairs, trailers, commercials and even programme censorship! All of which has been achieved on the ubiquitous desktop computer.
