ABSTRACT
The purpose of this first chapter is to introduce the reader to th area of study called operations management. As such it sets the scene for many of the subsequent chapters in the book. The specifi objectives are outlined below:

1 Defining operations managemen . Some functional descriptions are readily understood to convey a sense of what their subject matter actually is. Finance and personnel fall into this category. The words operations management, however, do not appear to carry the same immediacy. One of the firs aims of the chapter is to provide its readers with an understanding of what the term means, so that they can accurately describe the function in their own words.
