ABSTRACT

The fundamental differences between the stage play and the screenplay are mainly in technique. Depending on the type of material one is adapting, the genre might become a consideration. Plot, character, and theme are definitely elements in that choice. In recent times, more hybrids of both the stage and the screenplay formats have materialized. The appearance of hybrids suggests that good material might ultimately transcend form. Surely the truly creative writer can tell a successful story in any form. For all the analyses of both genres, one should never forget that modern theater has been greatly influenced by modern film techniques, but it is equally true that good narrative film has its roots in the theater.
