ABSTRACT

However small or large the project, there is a need to manage the specification process.

Office policy and procedure will influence the way in which design and production

information is produced. A consistent approach is required, and quality-management

systems may be seen as an essential tool in ensuring consistency. Specifications take

time to produce, and therefore, resource allocation and the effective use of computers

need careful consideration. The management of other consultants’ contributions, as

well as the need to manage design changes and product substitution, is addressed. The

chapter concludes by looking at the issue of ‘new’ products from the viewpoint of the

design office.
