ABSTRACT

As we contemplate the trends in the new millennium, it is curious that tourist attractions in the UK and elsewhere are still broadly defined and assessed from a traditional 1960s resource-based definition of sites or places ‘where it is feasible to charge admission for the sole purpose of sightseeing [and where] the primary purpose is to allow public access for entertainment, interest or education, rather than being primarily a retail outlet or a venue for sporting, theatrical or film performances’. The UK definition further notes that attractions ‘must be open to the public without prior booking… (Sightseeing in the UK, 1998).
