ABSTRACT

Since 2000, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have continued to estimate each year how much information exists on the planet Earth. An executive summary of their report, “How Much Information? 2003” is available at the Web site www.sims.berkeley.edu/ research/projects/how-much-info-2003/execsum.htm. Table D.2 provides just a few highlights (all in per-year units):

The research firm IDC predicts that HDD shipments worldwide in 2009 will be 630 million units. With an average of 100 GB per HDD, this amounts to 63 Exabytes.
