ABSTRACT

The past chapter examined some of the recent trends in succession planning, including the move towards identifying and growing pools of potential, sometimes described as acceleration pools. Whilst this concept is easy to understand in principle, the practicalities of moving to this approach are much more complex. How, for example, do you select people into the pool? What type of pool are you looking to create? How do you retain flexibility so that people can enter and exit the pool? and How do you deal with the specialists? This chapter aims to answer some of these questions.
