ABSTRACT

The term ‘special effects’ has taken on several connotations in today’s world. For most people, what immediately comes to mind and what seems to have become the default definition, is movie special effects: computergenerated outer space travel (Star Wars); giant beasts (King Kong); impossible movement (The Matrix Series and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon); simulated disasters (Poseidon Adventure); and cartoon animation. Most of these, while possible in limited situations, are not what we use in special events. What then, do we use, and what is different about what we use compared to movie special effects?
