ABSTRACT

The work of Ernest Boyer and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching stimulated an interesting debate regarding the aims of research in universities. Boyer (1990) articulated a paradigm shift in academic research to include three dimensions:

1. Integration of knowledge by bringing together otherwise isolated knowledge from two or more disciplines or fields, thus creating new insights and understanding. Burgess and Bryant (2001), for example, integrated the literature on profitability with that on revenue management to demonstrate the key role of hotel financial management in designing and implementing cost systems, in order for revenue management to shift its emphasis from revenue to profits.
