Smoothing The unidirectional voltage produced by the fullwave rectifiers consists of a series of positive half cycles occurring at a frequency of 100Hz. As discussed in Chapter 1, a reservoir capacitor converts this 'raw' d.c. into a smoother version but this will have some a.c. ripple present as shown in Fig. 4.4a. The size of the ripple voltage is determined by the current that is drawn from the supply, if the current demand increases the ripple voltage will also increase (Fig. 4.4b).
