ABSTRACT

Panel composition ranges from the single-panel, or splash page, to nine or more panels. Most manga tops out at six-panel pages and uses splash pages rarely, with most pages falling somewhere in between. A good starting point when composing a multiple-panel page is to begin with six panels of equal size. A bigger panel is good for a long shot, establishing shot, or for any shot that also needs a lot of room for dialogue. Just after Keil and Jeyne have fallen to the canyon them, there are two identical, parallel panels showing Keil and Jeyne unconscious in their respective mecha. Overuse tends to slow the pace too much, since fewer different things can happen to the same objects in one panel versus many panels. A drama with a lots of dialogue and emotion tends to have more panels per page, punctuated by an occasional splash page during the big break-up scene, for example.
