ABSTRACT

The act of flipping a manga page builds a natural pause in the flow of the story. Many storytellers use the between-page pause as a place to build suspense. For example, a cliffhanger will be set-up at the bottom of a right-hand page. The next, left-hand page will begin the hero’s attempt to escape it. Or, to throw things off, the next page will begin with a new scene elsewhere—continuing the subplot. The dramatic confession, the big reveal and the person saying something they should not haveall often find their home at the bottom of the page. Not every right-hand page should end that way, but some should, even in a romance story without any action per se.
