ABSTRACT
The UV/Skylight filter is a clear filter whose main purpose is protecting the front of your lens. You might see some packaging or promotional information that says how these filters will improve the colors in your photos. If they do I don’t think it’s in any appreciable amount. If you buy one for your lens do it for protection, not to improve your photos. There is no requirement to use one, just personal preference. If you’re photographing at the beach where salt spray is likely to get on the front of your lens you should use a UV filter even if you don’t normally use one. The salt spray can be damaging to the coating on your lens.
