ABSTRACT
The effect on legitimate organizations and markets throughout the world can be enormous. For example:
■ illegal drugs can reduce or destroy the effectiveness of employees, cause crime and increase taxes spent on preventive measures;
■ trade in counterfeit CDs, videos, smuggled goods and people can have serious financial effects on organizations, reducing sales and reputations;
■ smuggling reduces the market for legitimate goods and the collection of excise duties;
■ illegal immigrants have no employment rights and must work for whatever they are offered – destroying local jobs and standards of living;
■ virtual slave labour drives down costs of commodities and makes it hard for legitimate businesses to compete.
