ABSTRACT

Modeling I did all of the low poly modeling using Maya 8 (Fig.02a-b). I almost always start with a simple polygon cube and box model from there. As with any organic model, my main focus from the very beginning was to make sure that the edge loops were laid out nicely, so that the character deformed well when rigged. I knew this character wouldn’t be animated, but I still wanted a nice edge loop layout so that I could get the pose I wanted without much effort. I used Maya’s Smooth Proxy tool to get an idea of what the model would look like at higher subdivisions (Fig.03). Basically, this tool mirrors your low poly mesh as a high poly mesh. Any changes you make to the low poly object can be seen in real time on the high-res version.
