ABSTRACT

Dialog editing is an invisible art form. The good news is the great satisfaction that the transparency of their work does not reveal the fact that the dialog track is a patchwork of hundreds of cuts and pieces of presence so expertly prepared that the bits of production audio fit together seamlessly, smoothed by the dialog editor's handiwork. The bad news is that the dialog editor's efforts are usually so good that nobody notices. Dwayne Avery, the dialog editor, prepared the flawed dialog tracks in edited form, then downloaded the separate cut dialog tracks into the Sonic Solutions system to be fixed. The supervising sound editor hires a key dialog editor, often referred to as the dialog supervisor. During the course of sound editorial, the supervising sound editor may go over the work expectations from the client, including one or more temp dubs, as well as the calendar timeframe within which the work must be accomplished.
