ABSTRACT

Digital technology has essentially replaced conventional technology in various applications around the audio production studio. For example, the compact disc player has replaced the turntable as a necessary piece of production equipment. In fact, even CD players have become a less important production tool as audio files are merely moved around on computer platforms for various production processes. Other analog equipment, such as reel-to-reel or cassette tape recorders are also rarely found in today’s production facilities. This chapter looks at some of the digital equipment that offers a number of available formats to work with in the audio production environment. Although it is not intended to be a comprehensive survey, most of the equipment mentioned still plays a role in digital playback and recording in many audio production studios.
