ABSTRACT

In the last handout (Chapter 26) I used some cartoon strips as examples of characterization. Here I present still another to illustrate the desirability and benefi ts of being brief and yet explaining everything. By the use of a simple setting, well-chosen props, the attitudes, and terse, unambiguous dialog of the peasants; the locale is set, the story line is clearly presented, the characters are elegantly described (both by looks and dialog), and the story line moves right along to a defi nite conclusion — in two frames! It’s beautiful, whether you believe in the basic premise or not. Even the horsefl ies add atmosphere without distracting from the story’s progression.
