ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the most common problems found in domestic services installations. The chapter covers three topics: Water and Heating, Electrical Installations, and Above and Below-ground drainage.

WATER AND HEATING By the early part of the twentieth century the vast majority of new housing had a mains water supply. In addition, most houses were built with upstairs bathrooms. Mains pipework and pipework within the house was usually formed in lead; not until the 1950s did copper become the norm. The water supply was either direct or indirect (see below).
