ABSTRACT
The statutory body responsible for the notification of special sites in England is Natural England (previously this responsibility was with English Nature). In Wales this role is carried out by the Countryside Council for Wales and in Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage. The majority of the points in this chapter are relevant to all three statutory bodies, however it should be noted that it is written from an English perspective and slight differences may be found when dealing with cases in Wales and Scotland.
