ABSTRACT
Two of the most significant events in modern history took place a few years before the 1873 ‘divide’: the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and the Meiji Restoration in Japan ten years later, in 1867. The first ensured the ‘westernization’ of the globe; the second its ‘decolonization’.
