ABSTRACT

There are a number of building operations which are commonly performed in modernizing older houses and which are often attempted and may be managed by the DIY enthusiast. A typical list is considered in this chapter. The notes are intended as a general introduction to the complexity of each activity and to highlight some of the associated problems. They are not a comprehensive or technical guide. It is important to be realistic about the requirements in skill, time and effort involved with DIY work. Skill brings speed and it is often much quicker and so more cost-effective to employ a craftsman rather than to undertake DIY, although DIY for some can be mentally rewarding and interesting.
