ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines different approaches to the detailed survey of an existing dwelling. Because elderly buildings are rarely fault-free, it goes on to describe some common building defects and remedies and some of the characteristics of older services installations. Then three of the most serious problems encountered in surveys are discussed in detail — rising damp, poor foundations and timber decay. Finally, some notes on listed buildings are added.
