ABSTRACT

In this unit students will investigate the role of the engineer and how the design and/or manufacture of an engineered product is influenced by different factors such as new technology, legislation, and standards. The unit builds on work that students carried out previously in Unit 2: The Role of the Engineer and is designed to extend students’ understanding of engineering documentation, legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice and factors affecting health and safety. The unit is internally assessed and based on an in-depth investigation of a different engineered product or engineering service from that which students investigated previously in Unit 2. The product investigation should address each of the main issues raised in the unit and should also include an evaluation and suggested modifications. A sample of a typical student investigation is provided in the course book.
