ABSTRACT
Stress 5 Why should there be a chapter about stress? The answer is brief and easy. Research
shows that the result of excessive stress is that organisations experience higher levels of
sick leave, staff turnover and lower levels of motivation, morale and productivity, with
the consequences that organisations are less profitable, efficient and effective. In
addition, you, as an individual, need to be able to recognise when you are suffering from stress, and be able to recognise the causes, so that you can keep yourself healthy and
able to live life to the fullest. The UK Health and Safety Executive estimates the level of
self-reported stress each year, and the following list outlines the scale of stress-related
problems in UK organisations:
