ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the methodology of discourse, discourse analysis and

critical discourse analysis and their possible applications to the field of sport

management research. Discourses are the conversations and the meanings

behind those conversations of groups of people who hold certain ideas and

beliefs in common. In the context of sport management research, the anal-

ysis of discourses can provide new and exciting insights into the reasons

behind the adoption of certain sport policies, and the acceptance of certain

research outcomes as ‘‘truth’’. This chapter will provide an introduction and

overview to the concept of discourse and provide some suggestions as to

possible frameworks from which to start the process of discourse analysis in

the reading of sport management literature.
