ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the role of the non-profit sector in sport development.
The reasons why the non-profit sector plays such a large part in the provision
of sport participation opportunities and the various ways the non-profit
sector is involved in sport are reviewed. The scope of the non-profit sector’s
involvement in sport around the world is examined, with a particular
emphasis on the role of volunteers in administration, officiating and
coaching and the role of non-profit sport organizations. The chapter also
provides a summary of the relationship between non-profit sport organiza-
tions and the State.
