ABSTRACT
Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, Berlin has begun to develop into one of the world’s major tourist cities. This case examines the role of tourism in this development. On completion of the case you will:
Understand the background to the reunification of Germany and some of the issues involved.
Recognise how the tourism development of Berlin has been influenced by the contrasts between the former East and West Berlin.
Understand the development dilemmas surrounding the development of some of the historic features of Berlin.
Recognise that Berlin is competing with successful European capitals and tourist cities and that the ambitions of Berlin have not always been fulfilled.
Be aware of the economic issues involved in rebuilding the former East Germany and the impact that this has had on developing tourism in Berlin.
