This case study introduces an innovative tourism programme that involves the management of wildlife by local communities in Africa so that they can benefit directly from tourism and reduce poverty. On completion of this case you will:

Be aware of some of the wildlife management issues in Africa.

Understand the principles of the management of wildlife by local communities under the CAMPFIRE (Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources) programme.

Be aware that the key elements of the programme involve hunting and safari tourism for the economic benefit of local communities.

Understand that there is opposition to the programme from those who oppose hunting.

Recognise that the CAMPFIRE project is a good example of community-based tourism that assists in poverty alleviation.
