ABSTRACT

This case introduces the complex task of defining tourism, in terms of both who a tourist is, and also how we can define the tourism sector. Whilst these tasks may seem straightforward, in fact they have proved difficult and, only in recent years, have definitions been agreed at an international level. On completion of this case you will:

Be able to distinguish between the terms leisure, recreation and tourism and relate them to a recreation activity spectrum.

Have a clear understanding of the various technical terms involved in defining and measuring tourism.

Be aware of the issues involved in defining a tourist.

Be aware of the fact that there are different types of mobilities representing travellers as well as tourists.

Understand the approaches to defining the tourism sector.
