ABSTRACT

Since 2001 the tourism sector has been affected by a series of ‘shocks’ including 9/11, the Bali bombings, the bombings in Madrid and London, health crises and the Asian tsunami. This case shows how the sector has come to terms with the inevitability of such ‘wild card’ events and the process of crisis management that has been developed. On completing the case you will:

Recognise that crises can be either man-made, natural or a combination of both.

Understand the severity of the impact of major crises on the tourism sector.

Be aware of the process of crisis management and the stages of planning following a crisis.

Be familiar with the tourism sector’s response to bird flu.

Evaluate the response to health crises that can disrupt international tourism.
