ABSTRACT
Merriam (2001) posited that the scholarship on andragogy since 1990 has taken two directions. One seeks analysis of the origins of the concept for establishing it as a scientific discipline. The other critiques andragogy for its lack of attention to the learning context. She also asserts andragogy as one of two pillars of adult learning theory (self-directed learning being the other pillar) that will engender debate, discussion, research, and thus further enrich our understanding and practice of facilitating adult learning. Kapp (1833) first introduced the term (see replica on https://www.andragogy.net). Lindeman (1926) was the first to bring it to the U.S.A, with the term coming into common use internationally through the work of Malcolm Knowles (1970).
