ABSTRACT

The model presented in Chapter 1 presents the sport industry as comprising three distinct but overlapping sectors: the State or public sector, the commercial or professional sport sector, and the nonprofi t or voluntary sector. This chapter focuses on the nonprofi t or voluntary sector of the model; the various sport organizations that would be classifi ed as nonprofi t. Many terms have been used to refer to nonprofi t organizations that operate in a variety of industry sectors and countries around the world. These terms include voluntary, not for profi t, non-government, community, club based, associations, cooperatives, friendly societies, civil society and the third sector. For the purposes of this book we have chosen to use the term nonprofi t organizations to describe those organizations that are institutionally separate from the State, do not return profi ts to owners, are self-governing, have a signifi cant element of voluntary contribution and are formally incorporated.
