ABSTRACT

The built environment has a significant role to play in the sustainability agenda. The

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in its analysis

of energy consumption of OECD countries (2005), found that buildings and infra-

structure represented from 40 to 50% of gross capital formation for each of the

countries, and between 25 and 40% of final energy consumption. A survey by

Gensler (2008) repor ted that 73% of prope rty developers believe that spiralling

energy costs will make energy consumption a significant factor in building selection

and drive the development of more energy-efficient buildings.
