ABSTRACT
Although women’s labour market participation has increased rapidly and dramatically, women still tend to be concentrated in certain occupations and industries. The
terms ‘occupational sex segregation’ or ‘gender segregation’ are used to describe the
tendency for men and women to be employed in different occupations and sectors of
the economy. It is not entirely clear whether demand or supply side factors explain
gender segregation, although it is likely that both contribute (see Chapter 3).
