ABSTRACT

Although women’s labour market participation has increased rapidly and dramatically, women still tend to be concentrated in certain occupations and industries. The

terms ‘occupational sex segregation’ or ‘gender segregation’ are used to describe the

tendency for men and women to be employed in different occupations and sectors of

the economy. It is not entirely clear whether demand or supply side factors explain

gender segregation, although it is likely that both contribute (see Chapter 3).
